Abundância relativa e distribuição de Loricariichthys spixii (Steindachner) (Siluriformes, Loricariidae) no reservatório de Lajes, Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Duarte,Silvana; Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
The armored catfish Loricariichthys spixii (Steindachner, 1882) is the most abundant member of the Loricariidae family in the Lajes reservoir (22º42'-22º50'S 43º53' -44º05'W), the largest dam in the State of Rio de Janeiro State, but little is known about its biology and life cycle. A standardized fish sampling program in three zones of the reservoir (lower, middle and upper reaches), during three annual cycles: monthly in 1994/1996 and bi-monthly in 1997 was conducted out aiming to assess and add knowledge of the population structure of this species. Fishes were caught using gill nets (50 m long, 3 m depth and 25 to 45 mm meshes), amounting 160 samples. Water temperature, pH and transparency were registered at each sample to correlate with fish abundance....

Combining the Biocean database for deep-sea benthic data with the online Ocean Biogeographic Information System ArchiMer
Fabri, Marie-claire; Galeron, Joelle; Larour, Michel; Maudire, Gilbert.
The Biocean database was designed to collate the extremely large volume of data collected from different deep-sea ecosystem studies conducted by Ifremer's department of 'Environnement Profond' (Deep-Sea Environment). This database comes in a 6-application package: 2 of them are used on research vessels to collect operational data, whereas the others are used to link with a core database back on land. The latter are used to: (1) manage taxonomic nomenclature, (2) monitor the identification of faunal collections, (3) fill in chemical analyses results or measurement data files and (4) add or extract data from the database. Biocean was designed to facilitate ecosystem studies in the deep sea. It represents an important new resource for deep-sea ecologists and...

Abstract Araçá Bay, located in the city of São Sebastião, São Paulo, Brazil, is a protected area of substantial complexity. It represents the last remaining mangrove swamp preserve between the cities of Bertioga and Ubatuba on the northern coast of São Paulo State. This mangrove swamp has specific physical and chemical properties, and it shelters a wide variety of life, including fungi. These microorganisms are present in a variety of species with different morphophysiological features, and they have the ability to produce enzymes of biotechnological importance. The goal of this study was to quantify, isolate, and identify filamentous fungi in water and sediment samples from the Araçá Bay mangrove swamp in São Sebastião. Two samplings were performed in the...

Distribuição e abundância relativa de cumbaca Trachelyopterus striatulus Steindachner (Osteichthyes, Auchenipteridae) no reservatório de Lajes, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Duarte,Silvana; Caetano,Carla de Brito; Vicentini,Rafaela Nascimento; Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
The catfish Trachelyopterus striatulus Steindachner, 1877 is a very abundant fish species in reservoirs in Southeast Brazil, and its relative abundance seems to be increasing in several lentic environments. Despite of being a very common species, few information is available on its distribution and other aspects of ecology. The Lajes reservoir (22º42'-22º50'S e 43º53'-44º05'W) is the largest manmade lake for hydropower purposes in Rio de Janeiro State, where this species rank among the top abundant fishes, both in number and in biomass. Its relative abundance were compared in three zones of the reservoir (upper, central and lower), based on a standardized program, during three annual periods (monthly sampling in 1994 and bi-monthly sampling in 1996 and...

Effects of natural and anthropogenic environmental changes on riverine fish assemblages: a framework for ecological assessment of rivers BABT
Tejerina-Garro,Francisco Leonardo; Maldonado,Mabel; Ibañez,Carla; Pont,Didier; Roset,Nicolas; Oberdorff,Thierry.
Freshwater is a basic need for the mankind. Effective biological tools (ecologically based, efficient, rapid and consistently applicable to different ecological regions) are needed to measure the "health" of rivers. Adapting such tools over a broad geographic area requires a detailed understanding of both the patterns of organisms assemblage composition and distribution within and among water bodies under natural conditions, and the nature of the major environmental gradients that cause or explain these patterns. A comprehensive review of the available litterature dealing with the identification of environmental factors structuring riverine fish assemblages under natural conditions permits to identify the most consistent ones.

Environmental control of mesozooplankton community structure in the Seine estuary (English Channel) ArchiMer
Mouny, P; Dauvin, Jc.
This paper is the first to describe the spatio-temporal changes of mesozooplankton in the Seine estuary. Monthly samples were collected along the estuary in 1996 in order to analyse the seasonal changes of the mesozooplankton community and to identify the major environmental parameters that may influence the spatial distribution of zooplankton in this megatidal estuary. Statistical analysis (canonical correspondence analysis) showed that salinity was the main factor correlated with the longitudinal distribution of zooplankton. Marine species (Temora longicornis, barnacle larvae...) were located in the outer part of the estuary, while more oligohaline species (Eurytemora affinis) were recorded in the inner part of the estuary. A mixed zone was characterised...

Environmental parameters and antimicrobial susceptibility of enterobacteriaceae isolated from estuarine waters of São Vicente, São Paulo state, Brazil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Lourenço,N. G. G. S.; Takahashi,C. K.; Lopes,T. F.; Lopes,C. A. M..
Diseases transmitted by water consists a serious public health problem and enterobacteria are the main group of microorganisms responsible for outbreaks in humans. Such pathogenic bacteria proliferate in water polluted by domestic and industrial sewage and reach the population through seawater contact. The aim of the present work was to study environmental parameters as well as to identify Enterobacteriaceae species and their antimicrobial susceptibility in water samples collected from the estuarine area of São Vicente city (São Paulo State, Brazil). Strains were identified by using traditional biochemical tests described in literature and antimicrobial susceptibility tests were carried out using the disk diffusion method. Out of 26 samples, Escherichia...

Experimental ecology: A key to understanding fish biology in the wild ArchiMer
Suquet, Marc; Rochet, Marie-joelle; Gaignon, Jean-louis.
Because of natural complexity, field studies are often inconclusive with regards to the ultimate cause of a given change observed in wild animal populations. As a consequence, there is scope to develop an Experimental Ecology Approach (EEA). In this paper, we favour the use of experimental ecology studies to evaluate the effects of environmental factors on fish biology. We identify the advantages of EEA: disentangling the effects of several factors and identifying their respective roles, generating artificial scenarios and increasing our capability to collect and analyse data. This study emphasises the constraints of this approach: fish biological performances may be altered by rearing conditions, by domestication and by the prevention of some behaviours....

High-resolution vegetation history of West Africa during the last 145 ka ArchiMer
Dalibard, Mathieu; Popescu, Speranta-maria; Maley, Jean; Baudin, Francois; Melinte-dobrinescu, Mihaela-carmen; Pittet, Bernard; Marsset, Tania; Dennielou, Bernard; Droz, Laurence; Suc, Jean-pierre.
The essential characteristics of the vegetation dynamics of tropical Africa remain only partially known. This study assesses the succession of vegetation-types over Central Africa during the last two glacial/interglacial cycles. Analysis of core KZai 02, which contains pollen from the Zaire River watershed (latitudes 9°N-13°S), allows the investigation of long-term patterns of plant ecosystem development and their climatic causes. Core KZai 02 (18.20 m long) was recovered from 6°24.20′S/9°54.10′E in the uppermost axial edifice of the Zaire deep sea fan. The chronology of this sedimentary archive was established using nannofossils and correlations of pollen and total organic carbon signals with the nearby core GeoB1008. The pollen record indicates that: (i)...

Possibilities to prevent Crassostrea gigas oyster summer mortality in France ArchiMer
Samain, Jean-francois; Ropert, Michel; Bedier, Edouard; Soletchnik, Patrick; Mazurie, Joseph; Le Coz, Florence; Blin, Jean-louis; Mille, Dominique; Pajot, Régis; Haffray, Patrick; Bacher, Cedric; Grangere, Karine; Grangere, Karine; Pouvreau, Stephane; Bourles, Yves; Gohin, Francis; Woerther, Patrice; Boudry, Pierre.
Summer mortality has been reported in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, for many years in Japan, US and Europe. It affects both adults and juveniles and the causes of this phenomenon are complex. Environmental, physiological or pathological putative causes were studied all over the world. Recently, the MOREST project ((MORtalitEStivale) a multidisciplinary project (2001-2005) focused on his problem led to a better understanding of this phenomenon in France. The results showed in these geographical conditions, the main interactions between the oysters, their environment and certain pathogens.

Small-scale variability of protistan planktonic communities relative to environmental pressures and biotic interactions at two adjacent coastal stations ArchiMer
Genitsaris, Savvas; Monchy, Sebastien; Breton, Elsa; Lecuyer, Eric; Christaki, Urania.
The aim of this study was to analyze planktonic protistan assemblages under different environmental pressures at 2 adjacent coastal stations (inshore and offshore; similar to 6.4 km apart) in the eastern English Channel (EEC). Samples were collected between March 2012 and June 2013, and analyzed using bioinformatic analysis and tag pyrosequencing of the V2-V3 hypervariable region of the 18S rRNA gene. In addition to the taxonomic composition of the protistan communities, the detected operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were sorted into 6 major functional groups based on their trophic roles in marine systems. Comparisons of 13 environmental factors, including physical and chemical variables, indicated significant differences between the 2 stations. However,...

Spatial variation in stable isotopes and fatty acid trophic markers in albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) from the western Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Dhurmeea, Zahirah; Pethybridge, Heidi; Langlais, Clothilde; Somes, Christopher J.; Nikolic, Natacha; Bourjea, Jerome; Appadoo, Chandani; Bodin, Nathalie.
Albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) is a highly economically important species in the western Indian Ocean. However, knowledge of its ecological and nutritional characteristics, essential for proper management of the species, is lacking in the region. The trophodynamics of the Indian Ocean albacore was thus examined using known fatty acid trophic markers (FATMs) of primary producers, nutritional condition indices (NCIs) (omega-3/omega-6 ratio and total fatty acid content (TFA)), and baseline and lipid corrected stable isotope of carbon (δ13Ccorr) and nitrogen (δ15Ncorr), measured in the muscle tissue. We applied generalized additive mixed models to understand the spatiotemporal patterns and drivers of these tracers, taking into consideration several intrinsic...

Sublittoral hard substrate communities of the southern Delta area, SW Netherlands Naturalis
Kluijver, M.J. de.
During 1985 and 1986, sublittoral communities on hard substrates in the southern Delta area, SW Netherlands, were investigated at 79 stations. The stations were distributed over 20 localities situated in the saline Lake Grevelingen, the Oosterschelde estuary and the SE North Sea. The percentage cover of all sessile organisms were estimated using quadrat sampling techniques; data were processed using cluster analysis. The stations were characterized by the assessment of the most important environmental parameters: available light, hydrodynamics and sediment characteristics. Eight sublittoral communities on hard substrates are described by characteristic and dominant species. Three communities are subdivided into variants on account of differences in...

Two decades of Pseudo-nitzschia spp. blooms and king scallop (Pecten maximus) contamination by domoic acid along the French Atlantic and English Channel coasts: Seasonal dynamics, spatial heterogeneity and interannual variability ArchiMer
Husson, Berengere; Hernandez Farinas, Tania; Le Gendre, Romain; Schapira, Mathilde; Chapelle, Annie.
King scallop contamination (Pecten maximus) by domoic acid, a neurotoxin produced by some species of the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia, is highly problematic because of its lengthy retention in the bivalve tissue, leading to prolonged fishery closures. Data collected within the French Phytoplankton and Phycotoxin monitoring network (REPHY) over the 1995–2012 period were used to characterize the seasonal dynamics and the interannual variability of P.-nitzschia spp. blooms as well as the contamination of king scallop fishing grounds, in six contrasted bays distributed along the French Atlantic coast and English Channel. Monitoring revealed that these toxic events have become more frequent since the year 2000, but with varying magnitudes, frequencies and timing...
